How do you turn an ordinary day into something memorable? It begins by changing not what you do but how you experience it.
Most of us love a good routine, don’t we? Routines keep our lives organized, they help us manage our time, care for the people we love, and stay on top of our responsibilities. There’s a certain comfort in knowing what comes next and our mind loves that predictability, but our heart loves a little surprise.
Here’s something to think about: when we let routine lead us through the day, we’re driven more by obligation than by intention. We have lunch because it’s noon, and we go for a walk at 3:00 because that’s how we stick to a schedule. Many of us lived that way for decades. Family, work, appointments, responsibilities, our schedules weren’t just helpful, they were necessary.
“Our routines keep life organized; expression makes it memorable.”
It’s not that our daily activities are a problem, but the mindset behind doing the activities can be. What if, every now and then, we tossed the routine out the window and asked ourselves, “how would I like to express myself today?”
Maybe you’re craving pasta, or pizza or you heard Dean Martin singing “That’s Amore.” I just asked Google to play the song and had a dance around the dining room with my husband. Talk about expressing myself, right? That song or another Italian favourite could be the inspiration to invite friends over for an Italian-inspired evening. Everyone brings a favourite Italian dish, learns a few Italian phrases, and shares a favourite travel story or fun fact about Italy.
Or maybe it’s Lebanese, Greek, Mexican, or Chinese. The cuisine isn’t really the point. The point is transforming an ordinary meal into a memorable gathering and an expression of creativity.
Perhaps it’s taking a different walking route and noting five things you’ve never noticed before. Perhaps it’s setting the table with the good dishes on a Tuesday, writing a note to someone you appreciate, planting flowers simply because they make you smile, or inviting a neighbour over for dessert instead of waiting for a special occasion.
The task hasn’t changed, your experience of it has. That’s the power of a mindset shift. Our routines keep life organized; expression makes it memorable.
“Expression is what transforms ordinary moments into meaningful memories.”
The truth for many of us is that we were never encouraged to express ourselves. We were taught to be responsible, practical, dependable, and to put other people’s needs first. We learned to colour inside the lines because it felt safe. But one of the wonderful gifts of this stage of life is realizing we don’t have to keep living by someone else’s script. We can decorate the table just because we love the look of it. We can wear bright jackets, try a painting class even if we’ve never painted before. We can learn a few phrases in another language, and celebrate Thursday just because we want to. Every one of those choices is an expression of who we are.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Routine will always serve to keep us organized but if we approach our days by focusing only on our obligations, we might be missing out on some fun. What if we shifted our mindset ever so slightly and began to see each day as an opportunity for expression? Chances are, we’ll surprise ourselves by how much more colourful, creative, and meaningful life can become.
Perhaps the real opportunity in this chapter of life isn’t simply having more time. It’s finally giving ourselves permission to use it expressing who we really are.
